Egyptian Civilization - 5500 BCE
Introduction
Comprehension
Geography
The period around 5500 BC is when much of civilization transformed from a travelling
hunter/gatherer mode into a more stable, dynastic form. During this time Egyptian
society developed written languages and also formal religion. Agricultural communities
sprung up along the Nile River and common languages emerged that allowed people
from different regions to trade and interact better with each other.
Primitive forms of government emerged to keep order among a growing number of people.
Communities that were more advanced economically and politically than others began to exert
control and influence over less advanced groups. This in time led to the formation of kingdoms
and eventually to dynasties.
To a large extent the tone was set for the rest of history. Loyalty to ones tribe, community,
religious or ethnic group, leader, or state would dictate how humans would interact with one another
throughout the ages. The struggle for possessions, wealth, and above all territory had undoubtedly
begun with the earliest cavemen and cavewomen. However, the organization of large groups of
people into communities would take the struggle to a much higher level of conflict.
