The Boston Tea Party - 1773
Introduction
Comprehension
Geography
The British East India Company had control of the tea that was imported to
the American colonies; the company had a monopoly. Tea was very popular both
in England and in America. Smuggling of tea into the colonies did occur;
however, most of the tea consumed came from the British company.
The British, still trying to pay off their war debt, passed the Tea Act;
yet another tax on the colonists.
In 1773, some Boston colonists dressed up as Indians, boarded a British merchant
ship containing a cargo of tea, and threw the tea into Boston Harbor. This rebellious
act came to be known as The Boston Tea Party.
The tea party became another important event leading up to the American Revolution.
Once again, the colonists were demonstrating their objection to one of the Intolerable
Acts.
