Geography
During the French and Indian war the American colonists appreciated the significant
military contribution and sacrifice of the British soldiers. The colonists could not
have won the war without British assistance. Colonial militia and the British army
worked together to defeat the French and Indians.
During this time the colonists were willing to provide food and shelter for the English
soldiers; they were allies. However, when the war ended the colonists resented the fact
that Britain was maintaining a standing army in America. The colonists felt that the
soldiers were there for the purpose of imposing British regulations; not for the protection
of the colonists.
In 1765 the British government passed the Quartering Act. This act required the
colonists to provide British soldiers with items like bedding, beer, and food.
In addition, the act required the colonists to provide housing for British soldiers.
Often the soldiers would demand that the colonists allow them to bunk in their inns,
barns, and even in their ale houses and homes.
The Quartering Act became one of many British regulations that would be known as
"The Intolerable Acts". The American colonies and England were moving toward armed
confrontation.
